Dr. John Persson

Dr. John Craig Persson, 71, of Pentwater, formerly of Ludington, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

Born on June 15, 1954, John, affectionately known as “Dino” by many, was the son of the late Clarence J. and Shirley M. (Newton) Persson. He graduated from Grosse Pointe North High School in 1972 and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. Later, he received his doctorate from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1982 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Riverside Hospital in Detroit. John was a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists.

John married Susan (Holley) Persson on May 5, 2001, and they enjoyed over 24 years of love and companionship.

He retired from Persson Internal Medicine in 2014 after 33 years of dedicated service as an internal medicine physician. John joined the medical staff at Memorial Medical Center of West Michigan in 1988. During his tenure at MMC, he served as chief of staff, founded and was the medical director of the cardiac rehab program, and served on various medical staff committees. Prior to his practice in Ludington, John fulfilled a public health commitment in Reed City/Baldwin.

Known for his kind spirit and sense of humor, John was an enthusiastic automobile collector, avid road cyclist, music lover, animal lover, dulcimer player, and a dedicated fan of all things Michigan State. He treated his patients like family and cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, often traveling to new destinations.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Persson; his son, Jack Persson; his daughters, Erika (Eric) Zavasky and Hannah Persson; his grandchildren, Mia Persson and Reid Zavasky; a special friend who was like a daughter, Jessie (Jeff) Stachowiak, along with her children, Reese, Elle, and Will; his mother-in-law, Shirley A. Holley; his sisters-in-law, Cindy Holley and Nancy (Joe) Barberio; nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Clarence and Shirley, John was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald L. Holley, and his daughter-in-law, Christine Persson.

A memorial service will be held in John’s honor on Friday, October 3, 2025. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m. and a luncheon. Our family looks forward to celebrating John’s life, sharing stories, and hearing memories of him.
