LANSING — Michigan students will benefit from the addition of 28 law enforcement officers recently trained in the Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring (TEAM) School Liaison Program. The Michigan State Police Grants and Community Services Division recently hosted the five-day training.

Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tim Simon, who is the student resource officer at Shelby Public Schools, is among the 28 graduates.

“TEAM is a school-based, law-related curriculum taught to grades K-12 by TEAM-trained police officers with the goal of uniting educators, students, and law enforcement officers to help young people protect themselves from crime,” states an MSP press release. “During the 40-hour training course, officers receive instruction in student/juvenile psychology, classroom management and public speaking.

“In addition to traditional topics like personal safety, how to dial 911, the law and you, and dating violence, the TEAM curriculum includes information about school safety and security including facility assessments, bullying and harassment, cyber-crime, social media use, illicit drugs and vaping.”

The class included 15 deputies from county sheriffs’ offices, 11 officers from city/township police departments, one officer from a tribal police department and one out-of-state officer representing the following agencies:

  • Bloomfield Township Police Department
  • Brighton Police Department
  • Chikaming Township Police Department
  • Clare County Sheriff’s Office
  • Clawson Police Department
  • Deland Police Department, FL
  • Emmet County Sheriff’s Office
  • Farmington Hills Police Department
  • Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office
  • Kent County Sheriff’s Office
  • Kingston Police Department
  • Livingston County Sheriff’s Office
  • Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office
  • Monroe County Sheriff’s Office
  • Negaunee City Police Department
  • Niles Police Department
  • Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Police Department
  • Oakland County Sheriff’s Office
  • Oceana County Sheriff’s Office
  • Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office
  • Pleasant Ridge Police Department
  • Saginaw Township Police Department
  • Woodhaven Police Department

“TEAM allows officers to teach at any of the three levels of education — elementary, middle or high school — in public or private schools, aligning with the Michigan Model for Health. The curriculum has been implemented in over 250 Michigan school districts, and in several other states including Indiana, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah, Texas and Alabama.”
