HART — The Hart Police Department is warning residents to keep their car doors locked due to a recent rash of vehicle break-ins.
“The Hart Police Department has recently investigated several thefts from unlocked vehicles in the last week,” states a press release from HPD.
“Suspects are going from car to car, checking vehicles to see if they are unlocked. If the doors are unlocked, personal property is being stolen. We strongly encourage people not to leave anything of value in their vehicle, including firearms.”
HPD provided some tips to avoid being victimized by the thieves:
- Always lock your doors — even in your driveway or for “just a minute.”
- Close all windows and sunroofs when leaving your vehicle.
- Remove valuables (wallets, purses, electronics) — or hide them out of sight before arriving at your destination.
- Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Park your vehicle in your garage or in your driveway whenever possible.
- Never leave any personal information in your vehicle, such as vehicle title, registration, or insurance.
- Stay alert — report suspicious activity immediately to the Hart Police Department.
“Most thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity. Don’t give thieves the chance. City of Hart residents can report suspicious activity 24 hours a day by calling 911 or contacting Mason/Oceana Central Dispatch at (231) 869-5858.”
