HART — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that there is a phone scam targeting sex offender registrants.
“There is a new scam going around the county involving SOR registrants,” said Sgt. Jeremy Swihart. “In the last two days, we have had numerous calls from people that have been contacted by phone telling them they need to pay a fee for different SOR violations and if they don’t, they will be subject to arrest.
“The scammers say they are representing the sheriff’s office and MSP (Michigan State Police) in their conversations. We have had at least two individuals actually send them money.
“We will not call in regards to any violation or request money.”
Money is being requested via gift cards or electronic means, he said. The last victim reported a $1,000 loss.
