Julia McTaggart awarded Oceana County Democratic Party scholarship

HART — Recent Hart High School graduate Julia McTaggart was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Oceana County Democratic Party.

The Oceana County Democratic Party awards one scholarship available to any graduating senior residing in Oceana County who plans to seek further training beyond high school. “The Oceana County Democratic Party values community involvement throughout a lifetime,” states a press release. “The criteria for the scholarship prioritized involvement in service on a regular basis. This involvement might include ongoing projects or one-time events. While this service might be within the student’s school and extracurricular activities, community service was a primary consideration.

“When awarding Julia the scholarship, Jill VanAntwerp, representing the OCDP Scholarship Committee, pointed out that Julia’;s application stood out among the entries for her commitment to service. In an essay included in the application, Julia described growing up with an awareness of helping and giving to others instilled and modeled by her parents and grandparents. She wrote, ’Service is extremely important to me, and I believe it is one of the best ways to grow as a person while helping others.’ She pointed out that she realized during her various volunteer activities that her actions could have a positive impact on others, and concluded that seeing this motivated her to want to continue volunteering throughout her life.

“The OCDP congratulates Julia on her accomplishments and wishes her well as she begins her studies in the fall majoring in psychology at the University of Michigan.”
