HART — A 28-year-old Hart man was sentenced to one and a half to 15 years in prison Monday, June 9, in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court for cutting off his tether.
Steven Geno Rice III pleaded guilty to tampering with an electronic monitoring device March 4, according to court records.
Rice was placed on a tether as a part of his probation in Mason County, said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon. “While here in Oceana County, he cut the tether off,” said Bizon. “Cutting the tether off constituted a new crime.”
Rice’s probation in Mason County stems from 2023 convictions of methamphetamine/ecstasy possession, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police and driving while license suspended, according to court records. A probation hearing in that case is set for Tuesday, June 17, in Mason County’s 51s Circuit Court.
He received credit in the Oceana County tether tampering case for 109 days served in jail.
