ELBRIDGE TOWNSHIP — A 39-year-old Hart man faces a felony charge of fleeing a police officer after allegedly leading Oceana County sheriff’s deputies on high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon, June 3, that began on 140th Avenue and ended in the City of Hart, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
Robert Charles Brown finally surrendered after driving the 2006 black Chevrolet Impala over stop sticks twice during the chase, which ended in the 400 block of Water Street.
Brown, who was wanted on a felony warrant for dangerous drugs, was driving the car with an improper license plate, said the sheriff.
“When the deputies passed the vehicle, it accelerated northbound on Tyler Road, and the deputy made a u-turn and followed it north on 140th Avenue. It was pulling away at a high rate of speed,” said Sheriff Mast.
Then, deputies observed the car traveling on a two-track to the east. “The vehicle began traveling through tall grass through an orchard, running over downed trees and continuing to flee from the patrol car.”
After getting back onto pavement, the Impala reached speeds of 80-90 mph.
Deputies deployed stop sticks near 104th Avenue, and the suspect drove over them on the car’s left side with both the front and rear tires as it continued westbound on Tyler Road.
As the car approached 96th Avenue, stop sticks were again deployed by another officer — and the suspect ran over them again on the left side of the car. “Rubber debris was flung from the vehicle, and part of the car tires rolled off the vehicle. The vehicle began to smoke from its loss of two tires and began driving directly on the rims.”
