GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A two-story home at 613 N. June Dr. in the Silver Lake community is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Monday morning, June 9.

Fire departments from Hart, Shelby-Benona, Pentwater, Ferry Township, Walkerville, Grant Township and Mason County’s Riverton Township were called to the scene. Life EMS responded for medical standby.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family who lived in the home, said Sgt. Michael Cuevas of the Michigan State Police who was at the scene. “There were six people in the home — everyone is accounted for who was inside the home, including some animals” said Sgt. Cuevas. “Some cats are still at large — unsure if the cats made it out or not.

“The structure is a total loss, and there is a lot of heartfelt going out to them and everything they’ve lost. Property can be replaced — but people can’t.

“Based on dispatch information, it started in the garage, and it began quickly spreading. After it started in the garage and began quickly spreading, it sounded like people were still trying to get in the garage and gather belongings, but I believe fire personnel and EMS pulled them back, along with some neighbors. After law enforcement arrived on scene and confirmed everyone was outside the house, we provided traffic blocking for them so fire personnel can do their job and battle the flames.”

Bystander Chris Welling, who is a firefighter and paramedic in Kansas, just happened to be at the scene when visiting his uncle across the street. He said he helped make sure the occupants were in a safe place. “There were flames higher than the trees,” said Welling.

Access to the scene was challenging due to the home’s location on a steep hill and a narrow street. Heavy vegetation in the area caught fire next to the house.

Cuevas said he expected firefighters to remain on scene for several hours.

No injuries were reported.
