HART — A 51-year-old Montague woman was sentenced to five months in jail; two years probation; and ordered to pay $161,170.67 in restitution for a felony embezzlement conviction in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court Monday, June 2.
Amy Elizabeth Babcock pleaded “no contest” to the charge, April 14.
“Amy Babcock was hired by and stole from Northwind Construction,” said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon. Northwind Construction Inc. is a construction business based in Silver Lake that specializes in custom homes, according to its website. Babcock worked in the office, said Bizon. “Babcock had access to the books and the company stamp. She wrote herself checks and issued direct deposits.
“Paying the restitution is a requirement of her probation,” said the prosecutor. “Willfully refusing to pay would be a violation of her probation. However, with the enormous amount, it may not be possible to complete repayment in the time of probation. A restitution order survives after probation, and she will be required to pay even after probation.”
She was also ordered to pay $658 in fines and costs and received credit for two days served in jail.
Babcock previously embezzled from a Norton Shores business where she was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper, according to an article on mlive. She was sentenced in 2016 to four months in jail and two months probation in Muskegon County’s 14th Circuit Court.
In the Muskegon County case, Babcock embezzled from Proctor’s Custom Chrome Plating by writing company checks to herself and using company credit cards for personal use. She paid back the full restitution of $44,875.23, according to the article.
