Suspicious bones uncovered during foundation repair of home

May 19, 2025

GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A child’s shoe and bones were found under the floor of a house that was undergoing foundation repair in the 1800 block of North 56th Avenue, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

The suspicious bones were reported to police Sunday, May 18, shortly before 9 p.m.

“It may very well be animal bones,” said Sheriff Mast, but it’s possible they could be human. “They were leveling the foundation of the house. They were found beneath the foundation of the house in some dirt that hasn’t been touched in decades.” The house was built in 1884.

A child’s hair brush was also found as well as what appears to be burned clothing. The items appear to be from the early 20th Century, said Sheriff Mast.

The bones are being sent for anthropological testing, which is expected to take months, he said.
