WALKERVILLE — Kendra Walker’s first grade students at Walkerville Public Schools have been eagerly learning about the sun, moon and stars through creative and fun instruction.

“Today was the culmination of our Sun, Moon and Stars packet we have been studying for the past couple of months,” said Walker. “It starts with books — we read books about the sun and the moon; and then we move into the next section where it is more non-fiction; and then we go into the next section where we write about the sun, moon and stars.”

“My favorite book is ‘Summer Moon Rising.’ It’s about a boy and his family and what happens on their farm at different parts of the day.” The story ties in with the Walkerville community’s strong agricultural roots.

“We wrote a poem together first about the sun with a template, and then we used the same template and wrote a poem individually about the moon. Then, when they’re all done, they have a poem and then they draw a picture. Today, they presented it to some adults and read it out loud.” Each student brought home a packet of materials they worked on throughout the project.

“I like writing about it,” said student Mickiejo Manley. “The stars are very big and far away.”

“I like writing about the sun and the moon,” said student Della Riggs. “We’ve learned a lot of stuff about it. My favorite book was ‘Papa Gets a Moon for me.’”

“I liked the writing and all the fun stuff,” said Malakai Pearson. “I like seeing stars that make shapes,” said Malakai about gazing at the stars in the constellation dome.

“The constellation dome, writing and drawing the pictures,” were Olivia Droste’s favorite parts of the project, she said.

“There are a lot of different areas covered — it’s language arts but it’s also science,” said the teacher.

The curriculum connects with the school’s district’s “Blast to the Future” theme.
