Farm animals die in blaze
By Allison Scarbrough, News Editor
ELBRIDGE TOWNSHIP — A house, barn and woodshed are a total loss following a fire Tuesday night April 29, at 1661 N. 116th Ave.
The barn contained baby pigs and chickens that died in the blaze, said Walkerville Fire Chief Al Purdy. A tractor in the barn was also destroyed.
Firefighters from four Oceana County departments battled the blaze for about four hours, said Purdy.
“The barn caught fire first, and then the heat from that radiated to the house,” said Chief Purdy.

Firefighters from Hart, Shelby-Benona and Ferry Township assisted the Walkerville Fire Department. The Grant Township Fire Department Rehab Trailer was also on scene. Michigan State Police and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene, along with Life EMS. The fire was dispatched shortly before 8 p.m.
No one was injured. Police closed 116th Avenue in the vicinity of the fire.
The home is owned by Max Saunders, and it was insured, said the chief.
