ROTHBURY — A fire ripped through a garage at 7075 S. Clearwater Court in the Oceana Shores Subdivision Friday afternoon, April 25, completely destroying it.
Owner Mikki Rosema said she is thankful her house only received some damage to the siding, which melted from the extreme heat. “It was close — I was starting to freak out,” she said. Her husband was working in the garage and heard an explosion. “It went up quickly.” No one was injured.
The garage, which was built by her late father many years ago, is insured, she said. Her car was pulled out of the garage to safety. “The neighbors helped pull a few things out.”
Firefighters from Grant Township, Shelby-Benona and Ferry Township battled the blaze. Life EMS responded to the scene as standby, and the Michigan State Police assisted.
The garage was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived on scene, said Grant Township Assistant Fire Chief Jim Ginn at the scene. The cause of the fire is not immediately known, but it’s possible the fire may have started in a burn barrel behind the garage. “He said there was an explosion, and when he went out to see what it was, the back of the garage was on fire.
“I’m glad no one got hurt,” he said. “I think it’s awesome the way all the departments work together — all three of us really work hand-in-hand. We knocked it down real quick.”
