PENTWATER — The application process for the Pentwater Women’s Club annual scholarship contest is now open.
The PWC Scholarship Fund began in 1967 and has awarded more than 200 scholarships to Pentwater High School graduating seniors. The group also provides an annual scholarship to support a returning adult female student to West Shore Community College.
“This year, the club is offering over $15,000 in scholarships to these deserving students, including the West Shore and Pentwater applicants to be used for post-high school education, including college and trade/vocational education,” states a PWC press release.
“We are fortunate to be part of such a giving community,” said PWC President Kathy O’Connor.
“Year after year, the broader Pentwater community has supported the Pentwater Women’s Club mission in its efforts to provide scholarships to deserving students from both Mason County and Oceana County who attend Pentwater High School. Without the dedication and hard work of our membership, the generosity of area merchants and artists and the charitable spirit of the attendees at our event none of this would be possible.”
Scholarship applications for the Pentwater High School Class of 2025 are available by contacting a Pentwater High School administrator or by visiting http://www.pentwaterwomensclub.org/scholarship Student applicants who advance to the second round will be interviewed by the PWC Committee May 2. Scholarship winners will be recognized and awarded at the May Pentwater High School Honors Night.
Adult students from West Shore Community College who meet the qualifications for application should contact the financial aid office for more information.
Each year, the PWC hosts a ‘Wine and Art’ event to help fund the scholarship initiative. The event consists of wine-tasting, appetizers, and a silent auction of over 250 items. This year’s event is set for Sunday, May 18, at Park Place from 2-5 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance sold at Jilly’s Studio, Homebaked by Roxann and Port View or $30 at the door.
The Pentwater Literacy Club was founded Jan. 27, 1898 during a blizzard and continues today to enrich the community of Pentwater. In the early 1970’s, the club name was changed to the Pentwater Women’s Club to expand the area of involvement and outreach. The mission of the club is to promote civic welfare, to advance cultural and educational opportunities in our community, and to financially assist students in the Pentwater area who wish to attend institutions of higher learning.
Over these past 127 years, the Pentwater Women’s Club has supported and contributed to: providing hot lunches for school children, playground equipment, library books, scholarships, honoring war veterans, community beautification efforts/planting trees, and much more.
