Pentwater PD warns residents of real estate fraud attempt

February 20, 2025

PENTWATER — The Pentwater Police Department recently received a report of an attempted real estate fraud.

“A local realtor was contacted via email by someone who reported owning property in Pentwater,” states PPD on a Facebook post Thursday, Feb. 20. “The ‘alleged owner’ tried to list the property for sale.

“Fortunately, the realtor requested additional information to prove ownership. The ‘alleged owner’ stopped contacting the realtor, who immediately contacted police.

“The suspect in this case knew the name of the property owner, the address of the property, and the size of the lot. All this information is readily available through open-source information.

“The department wants to take this opportunity to remind anyone purchasing property to make sure to do an appropriate title search and consult a professional realtor if you have any questions regarding a land purchase.

“Thanks go out to our local realtor who thwarted a potential fraud. Well done!

“These types of fraud are becoming more common. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
