HART TOWNSHIP — Northbound US 31 north of Shelby was closed for over five hours Wednesday, Feb. 19, following a three-vehicle crash, according to Sgt. Dan Thomas of the Michigan State Police Hart Post.
No one was injured in the crash that involved two semi trucks and a plow truck, said Sgt. Thomas.
A plow truck was in the left lane clearing snow when two semi trucks were traveling in the right lane. One of the semis attempted to pass the semi ahead of it, and the driver did not see the plow truck due to whiteout conditions and struck the plow truck, which then caused it to hit the other semi truck, said Thomas.
“They both went into the woods,” said Thomas of the semi trucks, while the plow truck went into the median. “There was significant damage to both of the semis.”
The area of the highway was closed following the 1:15 p.m. crash until 6:30 p.m. for recovery of the semi trucks, as well as cleanup of a diesel fuel spill.
No other information was immediately available about the crash, which is being investigated by MSP’s motor carrier division.
