Shelby’s Cael Omness accepted to all-state jazz ensemble

SHELBY — For the first time in 10 years, a Shelby High School student has been accepted into the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association’s All-State Ensemble.

“We are extremely excited to announce that sophomore Cael Omness has been accepted to an MSBOA All-State Ensemble,” said Shelby Band Director Erin Ray.

Cael was notified of his acceptance after his recorded audition in Big Rapids.

“This is a huge accomplishment that takes dedication, practice, and passion for music,” said Ray. “Students across the State of Michigan prepare scales, improvisation, and an etude for the blind audition. The last instrumental all-state acceptance from Shelby was way back in 2014.

“Cael’s success is all him. His passion for music and jazz specifically propels him forward and he deserves every opportunity that comes his way. I’m hoping in my career to have more students be accepted for all-state ensembles or other groups similar, as it truly exposes you to some different repertoire, musicians, and instructors. Cael is going places!”

Students accepted into an all-state ensemble will rehearse and perform at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids Jan. 23-25.
