PENTWATER — Pentwater Public Schools Superintendent/Principal Craig Barter is thankful to the community for passing a $7.59 million bond proposal Tuesday, Nov. 5, during the general election.

The project focuses on keeping students and staff “warm, safe and secure.”

The school district had a similar proposal on the May 7 ballot that failed by just five votes — 509-504 — which was the third proposal rejected by voters in the last four years. Voters turned down two previous proposals in 2021‎ and 2022.

“It’s a community win, and it’s a win for our students and staff,” said Barter. “It’s a win for our community members, especially the ones who worked hard to spread the word. We’re on board with our ‘warm, safe and secure” focus. It’s a good day.”

The bond passed 982-775, including ballots cast in Mason County’s Riverton and Summit townships. The vote total in Oceana County is 974-769.

The key component to the proposal is constructing a secure entryway vestibule, along with a new fire alarm system, security system and adding exterior site lighting at the entrance, parking lot and drop-off area. The new entryway will funnel visitors to the office instead of visitors potentially having access to the entire school when they walk in the building. The project also includes technology upgrades, energy efficiency and improvements to building furnishings.

Construction is anticipated to begin about a year from now after the issuing of the bonds.
