Pirate News is a presentation of Hart Public Schools in partnership in Oceana County Press.
HART — Hart High School will bring one of literature’s most enduring young heroines, Meg Murry, back to life onstage — with her braces, stubbornness, and all. Meg is portrayed by HHS senior Olivia DeBrot, who has over 10 productions under her belt.
Just as readers of the 1962 classic book “A Wrinkle in Time” will remember, Meg joins forces with Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, alongside Asher Zost as Calvin O’Keefe and Carson Jensen — who has an equally impressive acting resume — as Charles Wallace. They work to battle the forces of evil to rescue Meg’s father, save humanity and find herself. In the end, we know two things for sure: 1. Love CAN overcome evil, and 2. There IS such a thing as a tesseract.
This one-hour-long production offers families with young children and audiences of all ages a masterfully retold story in a fresh and enduring style. Catch an amazing cast of 16 high school students and a tech team with another four for a cast and crew of 20 teenage thespians for a fabulous pre-holiday run.
Show times are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Hart Public Schools auditorium at Hart Middle School.
Creatively told with an ensemble that narrates the story with its movement and creates sound effects with voices and design aspects chosen by the teens themselves.
Directed by Hart High School Drama Club alumna from the Class of 2000 Cindy Beth Davis-Dykema, this fall production marks her return to the HMS auditorium.
A student and eventual colleague of Tom Kirk’s, Davis-Dykema began as a student actress, only to discuss her passion for youth theater education working for many years under Kirk’s mentorship with the Oceana Summer Youth Theatre. Davis-Dykema is honored to return to share her love of theater and arts leadership in her hometown community of Hart.
As arts education director for White Lake Youth Theatre with The Playhouse at White Lake, she runs year-round youth arts education in the 108-year-old theater that she assists in managing. One of the areas she most enjoys while working with youth is in creative movement and unique storytelling practices, which you will see embodied by the talented cast of “A Wrinkle in Time.”
