SHELBY —  Former Shelby High School teacher and varsity boys soccer coach Jairo Coronado was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years probation in Newaygo County’s 27th Circuit Court Monday, Oct. 28, for a felony conviction of using a computer to commit a crime.

Coronado, 40, pleaded guilty to the charge Aug. 26. One felony count of accosting a child for immoral purposes was dismissed.

Coronado’s online court file indicates that he pleaded guilty to accosting a child, and the charge of using a computer to commit a crime was dismissed. However, Coronado’s attorney Andrew LaPres said the opposite occurred, and the file is incorrect.

Accosting a child for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime are each punishable by up to four years in prison.

Coronado was arrested in a sting operation involving a multi-jurisdictional task force including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“The operation was set to target consumers of human trafficking/sextortion and prostitution and took place near the City of Newaygo,” previously said Newaygo County Sheriff Robert Mendham. “All decoys used in the operation were adults — no children were involved or harmed.”

Coronado resigned from his positions at Shelby Public Schools, said LaPres.

“It was a sting operation,” said LaPres. “He was chatting with a person in a chat forum (on his phone) and driving at the same time. He knew the person was young, but he didn’t know they were 15 years old, which is what they portrayed themselves as. He thought the person was older than that, but he didn’t think they were 18 either. He believed they were the age of consent, but not an adult. That’s why he took the plea of using a computer to commit a crime, which is the cell phone network.”

It was never clear whether the person was portraying a male or female victim, said the attorney.

Judge Robert D. Springstead gave Coronado credit for three days served in jail and ordered that he pay $258 in fines and costs.
