Vandals cause $40,000 in damages to newly-paved road

NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the malicious destruction of a 250-foot section of newly-paved East Baker Road due to vandals “spinning donuts.”

The Oceana County Road Commission reported that road sustained $40,000 in damages, said Lt. Shane Hasty of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, and will need to be repaved. The vandalism was reported Thursday, Oct. 24, and it is believed that the damages occurred overnight.

If anyone has any information about the case, they are asked to call the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office at 231-873-2121.

The following is other recent police activity in Oceana County:

Monday, Oct. 21, 2024:

  • 12:54 p.m., (Michigan State Police), a 50-year-old Whitehall man was arrested on a failure to appear warrant, 2400 block of Skeels Road, Otto Township. He was lodged in the Oceana County Jail.

Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024:

  • 10:30 a.m., (MSP), a 43-year-old Muskegon man turned himself in at the Hart post on a warrant issued in Muskegon County for assault and battery, City of Hart. He was turned over to law enforcement in Muskegon County.

Saturday Oct. 26, 2024:

  • 5:53 p.m., (OCSO), 19-year-old Mears man suffered a cut on his head when he fell off the 2022 KTM dirt bike he was riding at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Golden Township. He was transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Lakeshore in Shelby. The man was wearing a helmet.
