HART — A 25-year-old Shelby man who was involved in an hours long standoff with police after slitting another man’s throat last July was sentenced by Judge Susan K. Sniegowski to 15-60 years in prison in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court Monday, Oct. 7.
Logan Nathaniel Duvall pled “no contest” to assault with intent to murder, Sept. 9.
Duvall, who has remained lodged in the Oceana County Jail on a $1 million cash bond, received zero jail credit toward his prison sentence because he was on parole at the time of the offense, said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon.
The standoff occurred in the early morning hours of July 1 on Fourth Street in Shelby.
Duvall slit a 26-year-old Hart man’s throat with a knife, said Prosecutor Bizon. The man appears to have recovered from his physical injuries.
“We believe this was an appropriate sentence. The victim was present in court and agreed with this sentence. We hope the victim can heal,” said Bizon.
Duvall and his brother, 40-year-old Shane Mitchell Pollard, were arrested shortly before 8 a.m., July 1. Pollard, who is free on a personal recognizance bond, is charged with assaulting/resisting/obstructing police for his role in the police standoff. He is scheduled for a three-day jury trial in February, according to court records.
Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said Duvall and Powell were in the home for about three hours until finally surrendering to police who used tear gas to get them out. People who live in the area were evacuated from their homes.
Duvall has a lengthy criminal record. He was sentenced to 13 months to 10 years in prison, April 6, 2020, in Oceana County’s 27th (now 51st) Circuit Court for a conviction of breaking and entering with intent. He testified that he stole a quad from a barn in Leavitt Township and then returned to the crime scene to steal gas. He was wanted by police for car theft while on the run from law enforcement in December of 2019, but later captured. He was sentenced Dec. 3, 2018 to 18 months to 10 years in prison for a conviction of probation violation.
When he was 18 years old, Duvall was on probation for a conviction of receiving and concealing firearms and was convicted of tampering with an electronic monitoring device, July 31, 2017, for cutting off his tether with scissors.
Duvall pleaded “no contest” to car theft in a separate case that stems from a May 18, 2024 offense.
Alternative charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and assault with a dangerous weapon were dismissed.
