Dear Editor:
I am writing to address an issue that is increasingly shaping the future of rural America: immigration. While often overshadowed by urban-centric narratives, immigration is playing a crucial role in revitalizing and sustaining our rural communities, as it has strengthened and sustained our country for over 200 years.
In 2022, Oceana County’s agricultural sector contributed over $400 million to the local economy (Oceana Economic Alliance Report). According to a 2023 report from the MSU Extension, immigrants make up approximately 40 percent of the agricultural workforce in our state. Immigrant workers are essential in maintaining productivity and profitability. Their contributions are vital to ensuring that local farms can compete in a global market.
Immigrants also contribute significantly as entrepreneurs. Data from the American Immigration Council highlights that immigrants are 30 percent more likely to start businesses than native-born Americans. In Oceana County, successful businesses with immigrant roots contribute to the diversity and economic vitality of our area, attracting new customers and investment. The Oceana Chamber of Commerce reports that immigrant-owned businesses in our county have created over 150 new jobs in the past five years. In the upcoming election, please vote for leaders who are willing and capable of working together to make positive changes and support our local agricultural workforce.
