WEARE TOWNSHIP — An approximate 3,000-square-foot “barndo-minium” style home at 3460 W. Monroe Rd. was destroyed by fire Wednesday night, Sept. 18.
The pole barn structure was a “new build” with no occupants in it, said Hart Fire Chief Dwight Fuehring. “They were modeling it to be a house. Nobody was living there — it was all open on the inside.”
There were few contents inside the building. “There was a lawnmower, and it looks like a power washer was in there,” said the chief.
The ‘barndo-minium’ was recently listed on several real estate sites with an asking price of $625,000. It is listed as an unfinished six bedroom, three bath house. It was located at the end of a two-track off Monroe Road.
A person called 911 around 10:40 p.m. “Somebody saw the flames out back and drove down the road and saw it.”
Assisting the Hart Area Fire Department were departments from Pentwater, Crystal Township and Mason County’s Riverton Township, said the chief.
Approximately 40 firefighters battled the blaze for several hours, clearing the scene around 3 a.m.
The name of the building’s owner and information about whether or not it was insured were not immediately available. The cause is not immediately known, but it’s being investigated.
“It was a hell of a fire,” said the chief. “Every fireman there was pretty tired when they left. They had to pull all that steel. It was hot. Everyone did a great job. It was a hard fire with having to move all that pole barn steel by hand.”
Four water tender trucks attacked the blaze with approximately 15,000 gallons of water.
