Man sentenced to prison for arson

HART — A 58-year-old Hart man who set a mattress on fire inside an apartment last April was sentenced Monday, Sept. 9, in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court to a minimum of 27 months to a maximum of 20 years in prison. 

Luna Jesus Trigo, of 2320 W. Baseline Rd., pleaded “no contest” to the felony charge, July 15. Trigo received credit for 150 days served in jail. He was also ordered by Judge Susan K. Sniegowski to pay $1,064 in restitution, along with $458 in fines and costs.

Trigo, who was a resident in an apartment building on West Baseline Road, used a lighter to set a mattress on fire the afternoon of April 12, according to Michigan State Police Sgt. Dan Thomas. Another apartment resident dragged the mattress outside and extinguished the fire, said Thomas.

No one was injured, and fire department response was not requested. 

First-degree arson is punishable by up to life in prison.
