NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old Walkerville man received only minor injuries when the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country minivan he was driving went airborne for about 12 feet before hitting a house on Maple Island Road near Lure Road Wednesday, Sept. 4, shortly after 7 a.m., according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office report.

The man left the scene of the crash, and charges of second-offense driving while license suspended and failure to report an accident are pending, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. The police report is being turned over to the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office, said Mast.

The man was southbound on South Maple Island Road “at a high rate of speed,” states the report. He then “lost control and began to ‘yaw’ in the roadway. After over-correcting, the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right and struck an embankment. The vehicle went airborne for about 12 feet, and upon returning to the ground, it struck a residence and came to rest. Significant structural damage occurred to the residence. The owner was contacted. The driver of the scene left and failed to report the crash.”

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, states the report. The man was not wearing a seatbelt and did not require medical treatment. No one else was injured.
