WEARE TOWNSHIP — A 72-year-old Hart man riding a bicycle on Oceana Drive west of Hogan Road was killed when he was hit by an SUV Monday, Aug. 26, shortly before 8:30 a.m., according to the Michigan State Police, Hart post.

The man has been identified as Joseph Richard Schaner of Hart, said MSP Sgt. Dan Thomas. The SUV driver is a 37-year-old Hart man. His name is not being released at this time.

“MSP Hart Post troopers are investigating an SUV vs. bicycle fatal crash that occurred around 8:25 a.m. this morning,” states an MSP post on X, formerly Twitter. “Initial investigation shows that a vehicle traveling northbound on Oceana Drive near Hogan Road in Oceana County struck a bicyclist traveling in the same direction. The 72-year-old male bicyclist was declared deceased on scene. The crash remains under investigation.”

“We do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash,” said Sgt. Thomas. “Preliminary breath tests do not appear that there was alcohol involved.” Other details were not immediately available. “We’re still investigating the cause of the crash.”
