Moped rider fighting for life after crash

August 26, 2024

GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A 59-year-old Grandville man was critically injured following a moped crash Saturday, Aug. 24, shortly after 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Ridge Road and Easy Street.

“I was told this morning that the operator of the moped is not out of the woods,” said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast Monday, Aug. 26.

Gary Lee Wilfong was riding a white 2011 Yamaha C3XF50 when he “attempted to navigate a corner on North Ridge Road, but hit the shoulder of the road,” states an Oceana County Sheriff’s accident report.

Wilfong then “attempted to correct himself while attempting to avoid a ditch near the road” and “caught a branch overhanging the shoulder. He “was being pulled from the moped and accidentally hit the accelerator” and then hit a tree.

Wilfong “became unresponsive due to injuries” and “sustained life-threatening injuries requiring EMS to transport him to Trinity Health Hospital in Shelby for stabilization before being airlifted to Corewell Health Butterworth for further treatment.”

The report states that he was not wearing a helmet.
