WALKERVILLE — Critters beware as the first-ever Walkerville Varmint and Vermin Hunting Contest takes aim this fall.
“Come join us for a day filled with excitement as we hunt down those pesky critters in the heart of Walkerville, Michigan,” states a post on the Walkerville Thrives Facebook page. “Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, this event is perfect for anyone looking to showcase their skills in pest control. Get ready to put your tracking abilities to the test and see who can catch the most varmints and vermin!
“Grab your gear, gather your friends, and let’s see who will be crowned the ultimate pest wrangler. Don’t miss out on this thrilling competition that will have you on the edge of your seat. Join us for a day of fun challenges, and maybe even a few surprises along the way. See you at the Walkerville Varmint and Vermin contest!
WHEN: Sept. 15 to Oct. 6, 2024
WHAT: Targeted species and scoring: starling (2), house sparrow (2), feral pigeon (3), red squirrel (5), ground squirrel (5), opossum (8), porcupine (10), weasel (10), skunk with stink (10), woodchuck (15), skunk without stink (20)
COST: $25 per hunter
PRIZES: Cash and hunting gear
Half of the registration monies will go to Walkerville’s Rebuilding Community Committee, and half will go toward prize monies.
WHY: Support local businesses and sharpen hunters’ shooting skills and center. Enjoy the great outdoors in the Walkerville area.

Sponsors are needed: $100 critter sponsor or $200 big game sponsor.
RULES:
1) All hunters must have a Michigan license for targeted species.
2) Only the hunter who is registered may participate (no pooling of hunters).
3) Must follow Michigan DNR rules.
4) Fresh species only — no roadkills.
5) Hunters are responsible for proper disposal of game after the scoring is complete.
Opossum, porcupine, weasel, red squirrel, skunk, ground squirrel, woodchuck, Russian boar, feral pigeon, starling and house sparrow may be taken year-round with a valid Michigan hunting license, according to the DNR.
