PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A 22-year-old Crystal Township man was seriously injured after the vehicle he was driving collided with a semi truck and trailer Tuesday morning. Emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Pere Marquette Highway and the northbound US 31 offramp at 7:21 a.m.
According to Mason County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Warmuskerken, the Crystal Township man was driving southbound on Pere Marquette Highway in a Pontiac Montana mini van when his vehicle collided with a semi truck and trailer, driven by a 63-year-old Owosso man. The semi truck was attempting to make a left turn, north onto PM Highway from the offramp.
The semi truck was heading to Rieth-Riley Construction, but was not operated by Rieth-Riley (this is updated information from what was previously reported).
The driver of the mini van was trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication from fire department personnel. He was transported to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital by ambulance and then was transported, by helicopter, to a Grand Rapids trauma center, according to Warmuskerken. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
Emergency personnel responding to the scene include Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS. Also responding, to assist with scene clean-up was the City of Ludington Department of Public Works.
Personnel cleared the scene at 9:40 a.m. The crash remains under investigation.
