HART — A 20-year-old Saranac man was sentenced to 55 months to 15 years in prison in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court Monday, July 15, for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy at a Christian youth camp.
William David Kastanek, who was 18 years old at the time, sexually assaulted the boy at Camp Ao-Wa-Kiya in Stony Lake, said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon. Both Kastanek and the victim were campers at a winter church camp when the assault occurred Jan. 27, 2023.
Kastanek pleaded “no contest” to three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC) May 13. “There were three distinct acts that constituted the offense of CSC, third degree,” said Prosecutor Bizon, “but this happened in a single incident.”
In addition to the prison term, Kastanek was ordered to pay $4,111.35 in restitution for the victim’s counseling costs and transportation to and from court hearings, Bizon said. He and the victim knew each other prior to attending the camp. “Kastanek is from Saranac, and the victim is from a municipality near that.”
Kastanek had no prior criminal record, said Bizon. He is required to register as a sex offender as a result of his conviction.
