Two suspects arrested following hours-long standoff

SHELBY — Two male suspects were arrested shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, July 1, following an hours-long standoff with police.

“We just made two arrests from an incident that started earlier,” said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast in a phone interview from the scene at Fourth and Maple streets.

“Earlier in the morning, there had been a subject who came to Shelby hospital who had been assaulted with a cutting weapon,” said Sheriff Mast. The victim suffered a serious laceration, he said, and he believes the person was transported to another hospital.

“Our investigation led us to believe that the suspect was at a home on Fourth Street. When we made contact with the home, the occupants inside the home were heard arguing and yelling from inside. We used multiple sources in an attempt to make contact with the suspect and let him know that a warrant had been issued for his arrest and that he needed to exit the home and he refused to do so. He was refusing to leave and was being assisted by the second subject.

“We gave him some encouragement to exit the residence. He just came out and turned himself over to deputies on the scene.”

Deputies secured a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. The 24-year-old Shelby man is charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and assault with a dangerous weapon. The second suspect is charged with assaulting/resisting/obstructing police.

Mast said the suspects were in the home for about three hours until finally surrendering.

A local resident who contacted OCP said people who live in the area were evacuated from their homes.

“Everybody is safe, and there is no threat to the public,” said the sheriff. “They no longer need to avoid the area.”

The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office was assisted the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Shelby Police Department and the Shelby-Benona Fire Department, said Mast.

More information is expected to be released later.
