Teen airlifted following accidental shooting near Walkerville

‘Two friends were shooting guns when one thought the gun was unloaded, and the other person picked it up when an accidental discharge occurred.’

LEAVITT TOWNSHIP — An 18-year-old Newaygo County man was airlifted to Grand Rapids following an accidental shooting in the Walkerville area Monday night, June 24, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

“On Monday June 24, 2024 at approximately 9:24 p.m., we were dispatched to a reported shooting,” states Sheriff Mast in a press release. “Initial information to 911 was that there were several shots heard and then a call to 911 was made for help. 

“An 18-year-old Newaygo County man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Investigating deputies found that the shooting was accidental. Two friends were shooting guns when one thought the gun was unloaded, and the other person picked it up when an accidental discharge occurred. 

“Life EMS and Walkerville Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to treat the injured  person. He was flown by AeroMed to Corwell Health Butterworth to be treated. He is still in fair condition as of this morning (June 25).”

The incident occurred in the 8000 block of East Filmore Road.
