OTTO TOWNSHIP — An 18-year-old Hesperia man crashed an SUV into a tree and fled the scene, and then he allegedly broke into a nearby house and stole a vehicle, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

The teen was found by Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost after the break-in “a short distance away,” said the sheriff. The teen was found inside the truck, which was parked alongside the road when the fire chief responded to the crash scene.

“On June 21 at 10:42 p.m., Oceana County deputies responded to a vehicle accident on East Wilke Road near South 128th Avenue. There, deputies found a heavily-damaged 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle had been left along the roadside, and upon further investigation, it was found that an 18-year-old Hesperia man had crashed this vehicle into a tree and then fled the scene. The suspect was found a short time later. The 18-year-old was transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Hospital in Muskegon for care of his quite serious injuries. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in this crash.

“After the crash, it is believed that the suspect broke into a nearby home and stole a vehicle. He was located by the Grant Township fire chief a short distance away. The suspect has not been arrested as of this time as we await to see his medical condition. All of this information is allegations at this time as the suspect has not been convicted.”
