BENONA TOWNSHIP — A woman who is a camp counselor at Camp Ao Wa Kiya in Stony Lake was pinned into her bed by a tree that had fallen onto a cabin early Thursday morning, June 20, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The cabin, which was destroyed by the tree falling on it, was occupied by 12 elementary school age girls and two adult counselors, states MSP.
“At around 1:54 this morning, Troopers from the MSP Hart post were dispatched, along with Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, to Camp Ao Wa Kiya located in the 8400 block of West Thomas Street in Benona Township of Oceana County. A tree had fallen on a cabin occupied by approximately 12 campers (third, fourth and fifth grade females), along with two adult counselors. One of the counselors was pinned into her bed with the tree on top of her.
“Troopers arrived on scene and began moving debris and glass from a broken window away from the trapped individual who was freed after approximately an hour and a half. Thankfully, the adult counselor walked out of the destroyed cabin and appears to be just fine. A responding trooper did receive a minor hand injury and was treated at a local hospital.”
Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Life EMS and Eagle Towing assisted at the scene
