HART — A 41-year-old New Era man who ran the migrant farm worker program at Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo in New Era was ordered to pay $44,000 in restitution Monday, June 10, in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court as part of his sentence for an embezzlement conviction.
Celso Sanchez, of 5210 S. Water Rd., pleaded “no contest” to the charge, April 22, according to court records. One count of common law fraud was dismissed.
“He was a trusted crew leader or foreman and ran the H-2A visa program,” said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon.
The H-2A visa program helps American farmers fill employment gaps by hiring workers from other countries.
Celso was also sentenced to three days in jail with credit for three days served and two years probation.
“Paying off the restitution during probation is what is expected,” said Bizon. “If for some reason that does not happen in any case, the restitution order and obligation to pay survives the ending of probation.”
