Confusion at construction zone leads to SUV vs. tractor crash

June 14, 2024

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Confusion at a construction zone at the intersection of Oceana Drive and M 20 led to a two-vehicle crash Wednesday, June 12, according to an accident report from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

A 2022 Kenworth tractor driven by a 35-year-old Reed City man collided with a 2017 Ford Escape driven by a 34-year-old Shelby woman shortly after 8 a.m. The woman was injured but was not transported by ambulance to the hospital, according to the report.

The tractor “was being directed by a construction worker through the intersection traveling west on M 20 at Oceana Drive. The SUV “was also being directed by a construction worker through the intersection traveling south.”

The SUV was struck by the tractor on the driver’s side. The tractor “had the right-of-way as his line of traffic had been directed to go first, and (the SUV) should not have been directed to go until (the tractor’s) line of traffic had cleared the intersection.”
