Mary Converse

Mary Elizabeth Converse, 96, passed away peacefully at home with family by her side, Saturday, June 8, 2024. She was born at home April 27, 1928, in Denver Township, the daughter of George E. Heckman and Kate E. (Dickinson) Heckman.

After graduating from Hesperia High School in 1947, she embarked on a journey that led her to her beloved husband, John Henry Converse, whom she married in 1956.  Mary attended Hesperia United Methodist Church for many years.

Mary’s career at Gerber Products Company showcased her skills as a typist before she transitioned into the role of homemaker. Her volunteer work as a room mother and her passion for baking, particularly crafting specialty cakes such as wedding and birthday cakes, reflected her nurturing spirit and creativity.

Yet, Mary’s true happiness came from her family. She adored her grandchildren and found immense joy in spoiling them. Fishing was another of her passions, providing her with moments of tranquility and connection with nature.

Mary is survived by: her daughters, Denise (Marty) Hasty of Hesperia and Alisa (Rob) O’Neil of Hesperia; son, Rex (Joette) Converse of Montague; grandchildren, Krista Lynn (Devon) Sellers, Michael Martin Hasty, James Anthony Converse (Stephanie Stanley), Jaden Nicole White, Hilary Long, Madeline O’Neil, Ethan O’Neil, Mandy Kowal, and Marc Machovsky; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Sherry Heckman of Hesperia.

Mary was preceded in death by: her husband, John Converse; granddaughter, Madisan White; parents, George and Kate; and siblings, Marshall Heckman, Doris DeLong, Elgin Heckman, and Jerry Heckman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Hesperia Chapel, 61 Hawley Street, Hesperia, with Pastor Charlene Spaulding officiating. Interment will be in the East Hesperia Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service.
