OTTO TOWNSHIP — The 44-year-old man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his body who was shot and killed by a police officer during a standoff near the Oceana-Muskegon county line Saturday, May 25, has been identified.
Although the Michigan State Police has not released his name, Jonathan David Jurecki was identified by his friend as the man who was shot.
The “bomb” in the deadly standoff was later determined to be fake.
Jurecki had three criminal cases pending in Oceana County’s 79th District Court. He faced a felony count of assault with a dangerous weapon and failed to appear for a court hearing last March, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued and his bond forfeited, according to court records. The date of the offense was Feb. 23, 2024, court records state. He also faced a misdemeanor of malicious destruction of property from a Sept. 20, 2023 offense, and a jury trial in that case was scheduled to begin July 30, 2024, according to court records. Jurecki was also charged with a misdemeanor of malicious use of a telephone to threaten following a May 3, 2024 incident, court records state.
Jurecki’s address is listed as 2210 Skeels Rd., Montague, according to court records.
In Muskegon County, Jurecki was convicted of third-offense operating while under the influence of alcohol/drugs and driving while license suspended after driving his truck into a Pizza Ranch restaurant in Muskegon in 2018. Along with a two to 10 year prison term, he was ordered to pay $181,557 in restitution. Court records indicate that $181,764.25 is currently owed, including late fees.
Troopers from the Hart and Grand Rapids posts, the MSP Bomb Squad and MSP Emergency Support Team responded to the scene on the side of the road where Jurecki said he had a bomb on him. “Troopers observed an unknown device with wires attached to it on the person,” stated MSP on X (formerly Twitter.)
Troopers were dispatched to a residence in the 2000 block of Skeels Road earlier in the day for a man that was “acting erratically.”
“The individual had left the residence and was later located walking near Skeels and Nichols Roads. When he saw the troopers, he ran into the woods and came back out carrying a wired device and made the statement that he was going to kill everybody. Troopers contained the individual on the side of the roadway and requested additional units from the MSP Grand Rapids Post, MSP Bomb Squad and the Emergency Support Team. Residents in the area were immediately evacuated for safety.
“ES (Emergency Support) Team negotiators attempted to negotiate with the man for several hours. During the negotiations, there was a perceived threat from him at which point a shot was fired by an ES Team member that struck the man.”
