HART — Four female inmates at the Oceana County Jail have been charged with a total of 12 criminal counts in connection to using methamphetamine in the jail.
“The sheriff’s office has submitted a report which was reviewed,” said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. “As a result of the report, four females have been charged with a total of 12 counts. Names cannot be released until arraignment.
“All four have been charged with: controlled substance — possession of methamphetamine in violation of MCL (Michigan Compiled Law) 333.7403(2)(b)(i) and jails — prisoner possessing contraband, in violation of MCL 801.263(2).
“Two of the inmates have been charged with an additional count of lying to a peace officer — four-year or more crime investigation — contrary to MCL 750.479c(2)(c).
“One inmate has been charged with additional counts of controlled substance — delivery/manufacture of methamphetamine contrary to MCL 333.7401(2)(b)(i) and jails — furnishing contraband to prisoners.
“We take the safety and health of the inmates in our custody and protection very seriously,” said Prosecutor Bizon. “We take the integrity and security of the jail very seriously. We do not intend to take misbehavior by those already serving a sentence for misbehavior lightly.
“We must also note that all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.”
Meth possession is punishable by up to 10 years in prison; prisoner possessing contraband is punishable by up to five years; lying to a peace officer carries a two-year maximum; meth delivery/manufacture has a 20-year maximum; and furnishing contraband carries a five-year maximum term.
