HART TOWNSHIP — A pickup truck hauling debris from a job site crashed into a power pole on Oceana Drive at Filmore Road Tuesday, May 21, around noon knocking power lines into the roadway.
“A local fiber optic crew was heading southbound on Oceana Drive and tried making a right hand turn onto Filmore Road,” said Deputy Mike Fillips of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. “A combination of speed and weight in the vehicle caused the vehicle not to be able to negotiate the curve, striking the power pole, the power pole fiber optics and main supply line also crossing Oceana Drive going eastbound on Filmore. So, we shut traffic down. No one was injured. Basically the weight of the trailer and speed pushed the vehicle off the road into the power pole. Citations have been issued.”
Oceana Drive between Polk and Weaver roads was closed to traffic for about an hour and a half. It is expected to be closed again later Tuesday to get the power lines back up, said Fillips.
The pickup truck was driven by a 20-year-old Honduras man, and a 30-year-old man was a passenger in the truck.
Residents in the area are temporarily without power and internet service until the lines are restored.
Hart Area Fire Department, Shelby-Benona Fire Department, the Michigan State Police and Shelby Police Department assisted at the scene. ”Those units all assisted with traffic, and the sheriff’s office investigated the crash,” said the deputy.
