CLAYBANKS TOWNSHIP — Oceana County sheriff’s deputies used a taser to apprehend a car theft suspect after a brief foot pursuit Saturday, May 18, shortly after 6 a.m., according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
A 24-year-old Shelby man was arrested for unlawful driving away of an automobile and assaulting/resisting/obstructing police. He is accused of stealing a 2017 Ford Escape valued at $12,500, said Sheriff Mast.
The car’s GPS tracking system was used to find the address where the suspect was located in the 5800 block of South 44th Avenue. “Deputies proceeded to that address and called out to the occupants, and a person matching the description of the suspect exited the home.” The suspect tried to get to the vehicle, but was apprehended by the deputies after being tased.
The man is suspected of more car theft incidents over the weekend in the Montague area, said Mast. Those cases are being investigated by the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office and the Montague Police Department.
The man was lodged in the Oceana County Jail.
