Local firefighters respond to several other fires over the past several days
BENONA TOWNSHIP — Firefighters from the Shelby-Benona Fire Department extinguished a burning riding lawn mower Tuesday afternoon, May 7.
“Just before 4 o’clock this afternoon, the department was dispatched to a vehicle fire in Benona Township,” states the department’s Facebook page. “Per the dispatch information, a riding lawnmower had caught fire and was producing large flames. First-in units arrived to find a single mower on fire and were able to quickly extinguish it without any danger to exposures or the terrain.”
The fire department, along with other Oceana County departments, have been busy in the last several days with calls to other fires, including a deck, a garage and a structure, according to the department’s Facebook page.
“Just after 3:21 this morning, Shelby-Benona Fire Department crews along with Grant Township Fire and Rescue and Ferry Township Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire in our district’s Benona Township near Lake Michigan’s lakeshore.
“First arriving fire command found a ‘large deck’ on fire. Following a full size-up of the situation, mutual aid departments were cleared, and units from our station extinguished the fire. In total, it took 1,500 gallons of water and three of our units to fully put out the blaze. Crews were on scene for just over an hour.
“It is believed this fire spread from a fire pit that had not been properly extinguished. A great reminder for those that plan to have recreational fires this spring and summer. When you think it’s out, make sure to double check. This morning‘s fire could’ve been much worse. Had it not been caught early. Thank you, Grant Township Fire and Rescue, Ferry Township Fire Department, Life EMS Ambulance and Mason-Oceana 911 for their response and assistance this morning.”
Shelby firefighters also assisted on a structure fire, April 29:
“Delayed post yesterday April 29 at 5:13 p.m., your Crystal Township Fire Department was requested to assist Hart Area Fire Department on a structure fire with mutual aid from Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Pentwater Fire Department and Grant Township Fire and Rescue. We responded with our tanker 561 with our assistant chief, one firefighter and our captain who went POV, which is personal vehicle. We were on scene for over an hour where we then cleared the scene and returned to our station.”
The Shelby department also assisted on a garage fire, April 29, in Golden Township.
“Just after 5 p.m. last night, April 29, 2024, crews from our department along with Pentwater Fire Department and Life EMS Ambulance were dispatched to assist Hart Area Fire Department with a residential garage fire in Golden Township.
“Crews arrived to find heavy fire condition in a detached garage encroaching on the primary residence, as well as two travel trailers in the yard. Thanks to rapid responses and aggressive fire attack, the bulk of the damage was contained to the single building with minimal extension elsewhere. Crews cleared approximately two hours later and returned to the station, going back in service just after 7 p.m.”
