WALKERVILLE — Abdel Lopez, 16, is making history at Walkerville Public Schools.
The sophomore broke the school discus record with a throw measuring 105 feet and 8 inches, April 24, at a West Michigan D League Jamboree hosted by Mason County Eastern in Custer.
Abdel broke the previous record held by Jared Lopez (the two are not related) who threw the disc 105 feet and seven inches in 2021, said Walkerville Track Coach Emily Merten.
Abdel is an athlete to watch for in the conference, as he is rapidly improving as the season progresses. He also throws shot put for the Wildcats. At 6 feet tall and 240 pounds, his size is an advantage in the events.
“When he started the season, his PR (personal record) was 97; then he jumped to 100 feet; and now we’re at 105 feet,” said Merten. “He has a lot of potential.”
“It feels pretty good,” said Abdel. “I’m glad I hit it, and I’m trying to go for more.” His goal is to throw 115 feet this season. “I feel that it’s a pretty good goal to end the sophomore season.”
The key to successful throwing is patience, he said. “After you throw one bad throw, you can’t get frustrated. So, it’s really just patience. Keep practicing, and you’ll get it down.” He also credits his success to Coach Merten who has worked with him on his technique.
The Walkerville teacher, who is in her third year as Walkerville’s track and field coach, also coaches cross country and middle school girls basketball.
Working out in the weight room is helping the cause, and Abdel said he plans to put in more hours this summer.
“He’s put in a lot of hard work and is paying a lot of attention to detail,” said his coach.
He also plays basketball and runs cross country for Walkerville while getting “all As and one B” on his report card.
He is the son of Jose and Arely Lopez. “I feel like most of my strength comes from my dad — he’s a big guy, too.”
