Former Shelby teacher/coach arrested for accosting child

NEWAYGO — A former Shelby High School teacher and coach faces felony charges of accosting a child for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime following a sting operation.

Jairo Humberto Coronado, 39, was arrested by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office and was lodged in the Newaygo County Jail. According to 78th District Court staff, Coronado is scheduled for arraignment Thursday, May 2, at 9 a.m.

He has bonded out of the Newaygo County Jail, according to jail records. 

According to Newaygo County Sheriff Bob Mendham, a sting operation was conducted Thursday, April 18, involving a multi-jurisdictional task force consisting of Newaygo, Mecosta, Montcalm, Isabella and Osceola counties, the Michigan State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The task force conducted a “human trafficking/sextortion operation hosted by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Mendham in a post on the sheriff department’s Facebook page. “The operation was set to target consumers of human trafficking/sextortion and prostitution and took place near the City of Newaygo. At the conclusion of the operation, two individuals were arrested for solicitation and accosting a minor (less than 16 years of age). The two are identified as a 40-year-old Rockford resident and a 39-year-old Fremont resident. Both individuals were lodged in the Newaygo County Jail and are pending arraignment.

“Two other individuals were arrested for solicitation/prostitution — persons 18 years of age and older.

“All decoys used in the operation were adults — no children were involved or harmed.”

Accosting a child for immoral purposes is punishable by up to four years in prison, and using a computer to commit a crime is punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Coronado worked at Shelby High School as a Spanish and math teacher and the Shelby boys varsity soccer coach. Shelby Public Schools Superintendent Mark Olmstead stated that Coronado is no longer employed by the school district. Voicemails left for Sheriff Mendham and the Newaygo County Prosecutor’s Office seeking further information about the case have not been returned.
