ROTHBURY — Firefighters from Grant Township, Shelby-Benona and Montague departments quickly extinguished a house fire at 7967 Michigan Ave. Sunday afternoon, April 21, and saved a pet rabbit that was trapped upstairs.

“When we got here, there was pretty heavy smoke coming from the eaves,” said Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost at the scene. “Everybody was able to get out. We were able to save one rabbit that was upstairs, and he’s doing well. We knocked it down pretty quick. Within 10-15 minutes of being on scene, we had the fire under control. We kept most of the damage to the room of origin, and the rest of the building is just smoke damage. Nobody was hurt.” The residents of the home got their dog out of the house.

“We haven’t done our investigation, but it sounds like it was in a utility room in the basement is where the fire started.”

The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents who will be temporarily displaced due to fire and smoke damage in the brick house, which appears to be salvageable.

Chief Yost commended the residents for taking proper action. “They did everything right — they shut all the doors when they left and didn’t leave any doors open. Leaving doors open helps feed the fire.”

Michigan State Police closed Michigan Avenue/Oceana Drive in the vicinity of the blaze, which is located next to S&N Machine and Fabricating.

It was not immediately known if the house is insured.

The fire was dispatched at 4:22 p.m., and firefighters cleared the scene at 5:55 p.m.
