LANSING – The Oceana County Road Commission was recently honored with three statewide IMPRESS awards at the 2024 County Road Association (CRA) of Michigan Highway Conference.

“IMPRESS awards recognize county road agencies that demonstrate innovation on noteworthy projects in the categories of communications, operations and collaboration,” states a CRA press release.

OCRC received a collaboration award for paving a road with Snider Farms in Hart Township; a communications award for “Toolbox Talk Improving Safety Culture”; and an operations award for “Gravel Road Update Using Slag.”

“OCRC’s ability to partner with organizations to improve local roads shows its extensive commitment to the Oceana community,” said CRA CEO Denise Donohue. “Bringing back in-person safety talks better prepare Oceana’s staff for challenges that may arise in their day-to-day work.”

“OCRC recently partnered with Hart Township and Snider Farms to fix a main road to the farm. Snider Farms contributed significant funds out-of-pocket to see the project completed, improving its access to the market.

“Last year, OCRC brought back in-person safety talks. OCRC bought each employee a three-ring binder to take notes and ask questions for these meetings. OCRC received four safety awards for the initiative from other organizations.

“OCRC partnered with Shelby Township to fix some uneven gravel roads to keep the aggregate from being washed out and formed trenches along the roadway. To combat these issues, OCRC utilized 22A slag on the roads and found great success.

“An independent panel of communications and operations experts from several of Michigan’s 83 county road agencies judged all IMPRESS awards submissions. Award recipients were honored for projects that solved time constraints, labor costs, communication barriers and fostered collaboration.

“The 83 members of the County Road Association of Michigan represent the unified voice for a safe and efficient county transportation infrastructure system in Michigan, including appropriate stewardship of the public’s right-of-way in rural and urban Michigan.

“Collectively, Michigan’s county road agencies manage 75 percent of all roads in the state, including 90,500 miles of roads and 5,900 bridges. County road agencies also maintain the state’s highway system in 63 counties. Michigan has the nation’s fourth-largest local road system.”
