LEAVITT TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old Newaygo man who was in an apparent drug-induced delusional state while on a break-in crime spree remains hospitalized for multiple cuts and gashes he suffered while breaking out a large picture window of a home he allegedly invaded.

The disturbing incident occurred in the 5400 block of East Tyler Road near 166th Avenue Thursday, March 14, shortly after 1 p.m., said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

“There was a suspect attempting to gain entry into homes,” said the sheriff. “He had been staying in a nearby camper apparently and had been going from home to home. It’s likely he was having some drug-induced delusions, claiming he was being shot at. At one residence he was trying to gain entry into, he was met with the homeowner who defended the residence with a firearm and scared him off. No shots were fired.

“The suspect left, proceeding to the next residence where he did gain entry. He then caused considerable damage in the home whereupon he received extensive injuries. There was a lot of glass broken inside the residence, and the suspect injured himself badly. When deputies arrived and were able to contain him, they immediately began performing first aid, nearly having to don tourniquets. They were able to control his bleeding via compression. Walkerville Rescue came to the scene and continued to give aid toward his obvious injuries. Life EMS came and transported him to Muskegon for further treatment.”

It was expected that he would need to undergo surgical treatment.

Criminal charges of home invasion and malicious destruction of property over $1,000 will be pursued.
