ELBRIDGE TOWNSHIP — Three fire departments were dispatched to 265 East Tyler Road between 112th and 116th avenues for a trailer fire Wednesday, March 13, shortly before 8 p.m.

Fortunately, no one was living in the trailer and it was going to be torn down anyway, said Walkerville Fire Chief Al Purdy.

“It was an old mobile home they were using for storage, and they were getting ready to tear it down eventually,” Purdy said. “But they were burning some rubbish; it caught the grass on fire; it shot right up with the wind; and caught the house trailer on fire.” The trailer was located behind the owners’ home, he said.

“It’s a total loss — 100 percent.”

Fire crews were on scene for about an hour. The trailer was “fully engulfed” when firefighters arrived.

Walkerville Fire Department was assisted by Hart and Crystal Township fire departments. Grant Township Fire Department responded with its rehab trailer. “Mutual aid is a wonderful thing,” said the chief.

The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police assisted with traffic control, temporarily shutting down Tyler Road in the vicinity of the fire scene. “We had a lot of gawkers go by, so I had to request traffic control.”

No one was injured.
