Farm animals die in barn fire

LEAVITT TOWNSHIP — Four or five goats and a beef calf died in a barn fire early Monday morning, March 4, on East Harrison Road, according to Walkerville Fire Chief Al Purdy.

Fire departments from Walkerville, Hart, Ferry Township, Hesperia and Newaygo County’s Lilley Township were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m.

“It had been burning for quite a while,” said Purdy. “It was pert near down. It had been burning for a long time.” A neighbor noticed the flames and called 911. The owners were asleep inside their home at the time of the fire, he said.

“They had a fire earlier and they thought it was out, but it rekindled some time in the night.” The fire may have started from a heat lamp.

The barn and its contents are a total loss. An excavator was called to the scene. It is believed that the barn was insured.

Firefighters were on scene for over three hours. Life EMS and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office assisted. No one was injured.
